but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us."

Team Brycen 2011 was a SUCCESS!

Wonderful weather accompanied the Iowa Walk Now for Autism Speaks yesterday!  After donations were submitted yesterday, Team Brycen's total raised for 2011 was $5006 with 36 walkers participating!  2011 was definitely a success!

Iowa Walk Now for Autism Speaks, June 11 in West Des Moines

Thank you to everybody who donated to the team and a huge thank you to everybody who came out to show support through walking yesterday!

Below is a list of those who could walk and how they know Brycen:
Grandma & Grandpa O'Connell
Grandma & Grandpa Timmer
Uncle Craig, cousins Samantha & Emma
Uncle Pat, Aunt Erin, and cousin Abigail
Aunt Brenda, Uncle John, and cousin Jocelyn
Great-Uncle Dean, Great-Aunt Norma, and second cousin Tom
Family friends Lori, Josh, Kurt, Anna, and Aiden
Family friends Megan, Taylor, and Sawyer
Second cousin Ariel and boyfriend Austin
Babysitter Mallory and boyfriend Austin
Family friends Ryan, Lisa, Hannah, Elijah

While the 2011 walk is over, it doesn't mean the fight is even close to being won!  The kids and adults diagnosed with Autism is increasing at an alarming rate and research is constantly needed to determine the best therapies, provide the best home and educational services, and give opportunities to these people to succeed in the world.  Support is not just needed in monetary donations each year during our fundraising for Team Brycen, but support and understanding is needed every single day when you see someone that needs a little extra help with accomplishing a task or a parent that needs an extra smile while enduring a rough day.  Autism is all around us and though awareness is there, we still have a long way to go to understanding just how hard it can be for families to go through this every day.  Thank you again for a wonderful year for Team Brycen...and we will see you in about 6 months to start planning the 2012 Team Brycen!

Team Brycen: Why I Walk

There are so many reasons why Mike and I choose to participate in the Iowa Walk Now for Autism Speaks!  Obviously, the main reason is because Autism affects our family in so many ways.  Of course we want to raise awareness about Autism and the battles that Brycen and we fight every day.

Two years ago this month, June 2009, was when we received Brycen's initial diagnosis.  We felt so alone...unsure who we could trust to tell with this very important part of our life...unsure if we were strong enough to handle this for the rest of our lives.  It was hard enough using the word "Autism" to each other, so imagine how hard it was for us to actually call our family and friends and tell them about this.  While Brycen's diagnosis has brought us closer to many people, it also has pushed us further away from others for various reasons.  Through all of this, we continue to form relationships with others who truly do understand what we are going through...because those parents are fighting the same fight with their own kids.  It's amazing the bond you can feel with someone that you have never met because both of our children have the diagnosis of "Autism."  It's an instant connection...not a relationship that needs work...instant understanding of what life is like day after day, month after month, year after year.  These parents know what it's like to accept that our summers probably won't be spent at sporting events, city pools, neighborhood picnics...but will be spent scheduling our multiple therapy appts each week, reading new studies, trying new medicines or adding onto our children's sensory diets, keeping a consistent schedule to prevent meltdowns, trying to be one step ahead of anything that can set off our child that makes the rest of the day go down the drain, going to bed each night praying our child will be able to sleep because we are absolutely exhausted, ignoring the stares of other people when our child is flapping and screaming, etc.

I walk in support of all of these parents!  I will go to this walk, knowing if Brycen becomes upset over the crowd, someone touching him, or the noise...I can look into the crowd and see another parent dealing with the same exact thing.  Or I can look into the crowd and see another mom smiling at me, knowing she is not judging me or my child, but making that connection so I know I am not alone.  Despite feeling lonely most days, behind closed doors while my child can't handle the day-to-day events of life, I remember this one day each year that I and my child will feel so supported and loved by so many people we don't even know.  I walk knowing that one smile from me to a mom of a child newly diagnosed, could mean that mom can make it through one more day of this battle.

If you are joining me in the walk this year, please remember to be kind that day.  Please remember not to judge.  Please remember that these families are battling something that is still so unknown to doctors and the world.  Please just smile and show support for those families and individuals that may have a rough time.  It's a day to honor those in Iowa who fight this all day long, all year long...and this is a day that so many of us look forward to away from the reality that are lives are a little different from yours.  It's one day a year where we continue to develop those life-long connections with those people who truly understand.

Team Brycen 2011

Only 11 more days until Iowa Walk Now for Autism Speaks!!  Team Brycen 2011 has done a phenomenal job of fundraising again this year!  Our team has raised almost $4500 to date with more that has been mailed in over this last week.  We have a ton of walkers signed up and are once again planning a picnic lunch afterwards to celebrate another successful year.  Above you can see what our team shirts will look like this year!  Of course, we incorporated the train theme again to celebrate Brycen's passion for trains.

Thanks to everybody who has pledged to walk on June 11, as well as to everybody who has donated over the last several months.  We appreciate all of the support!

Brycen made it into Autism Speaks Top Photos for Light It Up Blue!

Here is the link to see Brycen's picture that was rated the top second picture out of thousands that were submitted to Autism Speaks in honor of Light It Up Blue for Autism Awareness in April!  It's so great to see his face out there representing how Autism can affect anybody...there isn't a specific look to Autism as you can see.  It is out there everywhere you go!  I want to give credit to my brother-in-law, John, who took many pictures that day to honor Brycen and his fight, as well as all who came out to support that day to walk.  I know I've said this before, but I can't say it enough...Thank you, John, for capturing the beauty of my little boy!

In addition to that, we are well on our way to meeting our goal of $3000 for Team Brycen.  I have attached another link that takes you directly to the team page on the Iowa Walk Now for Autism Speaks website.  We have many walkers signed up and many, many people who have donated from immediate family all the way to people that we have never even met!  Thank you for all of your support...and it would be great if we could see that number go ABOVE our goal again this year:)

We are off and running...please donate!!

Please click on the link below to be taken directly to Team Brycen's donation page for the Iowa Walk Now for Autism Speaks 2011! Our donations are starting to come in and we have less than 3 months to make our very important impact to this wonderful organization and all of the families they support. This is not to just support Brycen...but will support that classmate you had in high school, that little girl that lives down the street, the little boy in the grocery store, your best friend's child that is showing the initial signs...the point I am trying to make is that Autism is all around you and has been for many years. Please help stop this trend and make the numbers go backwards! With the research that Autism Speaks helps fund, this CAN and WILL happen!

Brycen's latest happenings!

A few things to update from the last week or so...

1. Brycen is doing GREAT with his trial device! He knows how to navigate from page to page, how to clear the words, and how to turn it on/off. He uses it at home every day, has used it at a few speech therapy appointments, in the community a couple of times, and at school during Kindergarten round-up last week. I am also sending it to school with him this week as it is our last week of the trial and I think he is ready for it. The teacher and associates are just as enthusiastic about giving him a voice in place of the basic PECS cards he chooses from. I programmed in a few of their circle time activities so he can just push the button to tell them what "job" he wants for the day and what kind of milk he chooses for snack. Next Monday is his last day with the device and then we just sit & wait while people that don't even know Brycen make a decision on if this is the right device for him, will it benefit him in the long run, and will they pay for it. Very scary to think it's a possibility that it could be denied:(

2. We had a conference on Monday to discuss options for Kindergarten. It was agreed upon that Brycen will attend the every day/all day kindergarten class next year. While he cannot do all the things that the typical child going into kindergarten can do, he needs that consistency of all day/every day to make progress and keep his routine in place. His "score" on the kindergarten testing was actually a 22. When his teacher showed me the rating scale, the lowest category was 25 which was the bottom part of the 3 1/2 yr old level. While you would think this would upset me to see his score not even be on the chart, it actually reassured me that we know exactly where he is developmentally. 1 1/2 years ago at U of I, he was at a 16 month old level with communication...last summer at his first speech evaluation, he was at an 18 month old level...and now it seems like we may be getting closer to the 2 yr old level. While his actual speaking is not at this level, his other ways of communicating and understanding what is being asked of him is progressing him along. The discussion will continue over the next few months and through his IEP meeting in May about having a 1:1 associate with him. The feedback so far is that it is very important to do this to set him up for success!
In addition to all of this great news, we also learned that Brycen DOES qualify for Extended School Year! Last year, the old school district was very adamant that he had to show regression following an extended break from school before he could be approved...but this district says he meets other standards that qualify him. Mike and I hadn't even asked about this yet and were very surprised when his teacher pulled us aside in the hallway to let us know they discussed it. This is just one more thing that proves this school is very good at advocating and supporting special needs. He doesn't need to be in a secluded special needs school to get the support he deserves if he is here! We aren't sure of the dates yet, but I believe it is spread out over the summer over a few weeks. It'll be so beneficial to him to keep that "foot in the door" so to speak. As a parent, I will do anything in my power to prevent regression again. We've "been there, done that" when he was 2 years old, and when the district told us this last year, I was on a quest to get other services to keep him going (which is when we started speech and OT at the old hospital clinic). I don't care if that would have prevented him from qualifying then, but I would rather him be home all summer and me have to work my tail off to help him stay at his level, than to risk him going backwards again.

3. On a not so good note, Brycen did one thing yesterday that I have been dreading. When I had my back turned to him while putting on my shoes, he opened the front door on his own. We have been lucky in that his fine motor skills have not allowed him to do this before, but I guess he has now figured it out. As you recall, we recently started having him wear an identification bracelet for when times like this would come. He does not understand the lock on the knob yet, so we are safe for the time being as long as we remember to keep it locked. He is also very cautious about being away from us still, so hopefully that will be in our favor with this newfound skill. It's just really one of those moments that scared me and made me realize how important it is for us to be one-step ahead of his progress. I think we are doing pretty good so far and hoping we can continue to do that in the future as he gains more "skills."

4. Brycen has been consistently taking his new medication for the past 2 1/2 weeks. After some trial and error, we found we have to mix it with chocolate milk to hide the bitter taste. While we haven't noticed any improvements in his OCD behavior and anxiety, we have not noticed any side effects either. She did say it takes up to 4-6 weeks to see results and because he is on such a low dose, we have the ability to increase it too. We return to see her the first week of April to evaluate.

4. Here is the link to Brycen's team page for the Iowa Walk Now for Autism Speaks that takes place on Saturday, June 11 in West Des Moines. We have 23 walkers signed up already and would love to have even more come out and support him during this special day. We are also asking that everybody consider a donation to the team. No matter how big or small, every dollar counts towards research and support of those diagnosed. The statistics keep rising and it's very scary to see that...and we need all the help we can get to the bottom of this disorder! We NEED your help!

SAVE THE DATE! 2011 Iowa Walk Now for Autism Speaks

June 11, 2011: You will find our family in Des Moines at the Iowa Walk Now for Autism Speaks event!
Please join us by clicking on the link below and signing up as a walker. Please also consider a donation when you are able to. This is a great organization that funds much of the research you hear about lately!
We battle Autism every single day with Brycen, but this day is very important to our family to show our dedication to our "Autism family" and to be there showing that we continue to have hope in what the future brings for Brycen and all others affected by an ASD.

Autism and Our Family

"Autism"----It's one word that can change the life of a child and family in so many ways. Autism Spectrum Disorders are being diagnosed at a rate of 1 in 68 children currently. If you do not already know someone that has been diagnosed, the statistics say it won't be long before you do.

Our son developed typically until around the time he turned 2 years old. We heard words...we saw him play with other kids...we watched as he played with his toys appropriately...we made eye contact with him...overall we understood his wants and needs. In a matter of a few months, that was all taken away from him. He began lining up toys, lost all of his words and signs except for one word "ball", ignored other kids, could not sleep through the night, lost eye contact and the ability to follow directions, and he had no way of letting us know what he wanted or how he felt. It was heartbreaking to see something happening to our child that we couldn't stop!

Brycen began receiving home therapy 1-2 times per month for about 6 months before we realized it wasn't just developmental delays. We knew it was Autism...we just didn't want to say it outloud to anyone. He was officially diagnosed with Autism (classic form and regressive), as well as Mental Retardation in August 2009 by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

We continue to learn as we make our way through this journey with Brycen and we will continue to share this journey with you on this blog! The blog has been a great therapy for us to be able to vent our frustrations and struggles with accepting that we have a child with special needs, while sharing how blessed we are to have a child teach us what life truly means. It has also been a great way to inform others of his progress and changes over the last couple of years.

Thank you for your support of Brycen and our family! We hope you are able to learn something through this blog no matter if you are a parent of a child with special needs or a neurotypical child, a teacher or therapist, a family member, or just someone that is interested in the journey that a family goes on as they learn their child is battling a life-long disorder.
